Bengaluru: In a heart wrenching incident, a two-and-half-year-old female dog named Ammu died of mental trauma on Saturday, after fighting a non-curable mental ailment for over four months.
It may be recalled that Ammu’s tragic story made headlines in March when media reported the incident of how a merciless woman thumped and killed all of Ammu’s eight puppies in a bid to teach ‘Ammu’ a lesson.
Ponnamma, wife of a ex-honorary flight lieutenant in Krishnanagar near Peenya had killed the puppies right in front of Ammu, a street dog living in the colony.
The incident had left Ammu devastated and on Saturday, July 9 Ammu succumbed to what is called canine distemper (a contagious and serious viral illness with no known cure) caused by mental trauma. Residents of the colony where Ammu lived say that after the gruesome culling of her puppies, Ammu had stopped taking food and was evidently dejected. She used to linger around the spot where her puppies were buried, say eyewitnesses.
Ammu’s health deteriorated on July 6 and Good Samaritans from the colony rushed her to veterinary hospital at Queen’s road, run by an NGO, but no efforts could save the grieving mother! What is surprising is that Ponnamma was arrested under Section 429 of the IPC but later she was released on bail.
Such acts of atrocities are only on rise of late and animal rights activists say that meager punishments in such cases are the reason behind people taking acts of atrocities against animals so casually.
