Aizawl: Today, while on a mission to airlift Myanmar army personnel who had sought refuge in the northeastern state after fierce clashes with rebel groups in their country, a military aircraft from Myanmar skidded off the runway at Mizoram’s Lengpui Airport.
Lengpui’s tabletop runway is renowned for being difficult. The Shaanxi Y-8 aircraft belonging to Myanmar broke apart as it skidded off the runway during landing.
At least 184 soldiers from Myanmar were sent home by India on Monday. 276 Myanmarese soldiers entered Mizoram last week, according to an official statement from the Assam Rifles, and 184 of them were returned to Myanmar on Monday.
The soldiers entered Bandukbanga village at the India-Myanmar-Bangladesh trijunction in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district on January 17, and approached the Assam Rifles for assistance.
The ‘Arakan Army,’ an insurgent group from Myanmar fighting for an independent Rakhine State, overran and captured their camp, forcing them to escape to Mizoram.
After being brought to the Assam Rifles camp at Parva, the soldiers from Myanmar were moved to Lunglei to be under observation. The group was flown on Myanmar Air Force aircraft from Lengpui airport near Aizawl to Sittwe in Rakhine State, Myanmar, to begin the repatriation process.
The final 92 soldiers will be returned home today, an Assam Rifles official announced. There are 240 lower-rank employees and 36 officers in the group, which is led by a colonel.
