UAE: The United Arab Emirates has warned its citizens to avoid wearing traditional garments like the white kandura, or ankle-length robe, and headscarf while travelling abroad after an Emirati man was handcuffed in the US.

Women too have been urged to abide by bans on face veils in parts of Europe.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a tweet late Saturday that Emiratis should avoid wearing the garments for their safety. Attacks by militants have given rise to hatred of the Arab world.

An Emirati national Ahmed al-Menhali was detained at gunpoint last week while wearing the traditional clothes on Sunday in Avon, Ohio after a staff from a hotel suspected that he could be part of the dreaded Islamic State group.
