Postal Museum inaugurated at Mysuru Postal Training Centre

Mysuru: In a move to strengthen the postal services in the country, Indian Postal Department will set-up six-additional Postal Training Centres (PTC’s) in the country. S K Sinha Member of Human Resource Development, Postal Services Board said at a golden Jubilee celebrations of Postal Training Centre, Mysuru here on Monday.

Sinha said to change the attitude and to produce committed and effective employees, the department is mulling to set-up additional training centres across the country. ” The centres will be set-up under the 12th five year plan”, he added.

The centres will impart training to employees on recent technologies and to meet present day’s challenges. In addition, he said commitment and change among employees is very much required to meet the challenges, thus training has important role to play in changing the attitude of employees.

“The department is also planning to impart training for group A and B employees to make their service better, he added. Since, 1980’s the nature of business has changed and the time is high for change”, he pointed out.

He also lauded Mysuru PTC for it’s training programmes and other activities. The training centre which started functioning on April 20, 1965, has trained 1,16,590 trainees under various courses. The centre follows the Universal Postal Union Train Post Methodology for imparting training. Mysuru PTC has been catering the needs of Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh Postal circles.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Postmaster General Karnataka Circle M S Ramanujan said, “postal department is gearing up, but it takes little time to absorb recent technologies and services”.

S K Sinha inaugurated the Postal Museum in the main building of PTC.  The museum is housed in an area of around 1250 sq ft. There are many sections and the exhibits are aesthetically displayed. The designing and their layout is really in a presentable format and the visitor can appreciate these rare collections.

In Philately Section, the postage stamps are thematically displayed. The visitor can understand the chronology and the importance, even without a guide’s assistance. The oldest stamp on display is one printed in 1947 of 1.5 Annas. This is the first stamp issued by department of Posts, post independence. 

Different types of badges are on display in the next section. Various badges worn by employees of different cares are chronologically displayed. The brass Badges, then the Badges made of steel and plastic are on display.

The weights and measures section houses different types of old scales along with the weights. Weighing scales in ‘tolas’ before the Kilograms era are also exhibited.

Another major attraction is attire of Postman displayed in museum. The attire with two bags, belt, a water with cooling facility, slings across the shoulder, and a pouch for cash collection manufactured in USA are in good condition even today and looks usable.

Letter boxes of many kinds and shapes are kept for display. Accessories of Runner of the by-gone era are well displayed. A cash chest manufactured in London, which was used to keep the cash and valuables of the post office, is also exhibited.

There is also a Morse  instrument with a connector on display which was used for sending communication in Morse code. Many permanent documents of post office like the old order books. A Savings bank journal and other artefacts belonging to 19th century are displayed.
