Madikeri: The long standing issue of constructing an approach road to the new District Administration complex of Kodagu has been resolved with the administration deciding to lay a road connecting the Mangalore Road. This decision has been a great relief to the St Michael School and Church management.
The construction works of the DC office complex is complete and the building is handed over to the district administration. All offices concerned would be shifted to the new premises by July end. However the only stumbling block was a good approach road as the existing road was quite narrow. Moreover, as this road passes through the playground of the St Michael School, the school management had opposed the proposal on the grounds that it would inconvenience students.
Though later on it was decided to construct a flyover via Mangalore Road at a cost of Rs 15 crores, the project could not get the government nod and had to be dropped.
The St Michael Church management had opposed the widening of the existing road as that would require demolition of the church compound. Even the previous district minister Dr H.C,Mahadevappa had visited the spot to study the problem. The present Home Minister KJ George who is the district minister too had visited the spot but of no avail.
The administration has now formulated a new scheme of constructing an alternate road via Mangalore Road at a cost of Rs 4.5 cores. The project has been approved. The works are yet to start and envisages construction of a huge retention wall. The proposal has been a great relief to the St Michael School and Church management.
