Kushalanagar : The Harangi that is the key dam among other dams lies in Cauvery valley has been full, owing to which its 4 crest gates were opened and let 400 cusecs of water to the river.
The water level was 2,857.14 feet with the total capacity of 2,859 feet. Besides, the inflow into the dam was 3,579 cusecs of water. The irrigation officers after offering the puja at the dam, let 400 cusecs of water by opening 4 crest gates. “The water levels in the dam are being maintained at 2,857 feet with safety concern,” said dam division irrigation department executive engineer Siddaraju.
“The water will be released into the canals of farmers after convening a meeting of irrigation advisory Committee after July 15. Haranagi dam has the capacity to hold 8.5 TMC and it has already touched 7.12 TMC. It is a delight to see the water gushing out of the crest gates. The siren has been put on thrice to alert the farmers and fisheries, the people on the shores of rivers to seek shelter in high lands, before releasing the water from the dam into the plains. The farmers are happy as the Harangi dam is already full on June and excess water has been released into the canals on July 1.
Harangi dam irrigates 1,34,895 hectares of farmlands of Kodagu district and taluks of Piriyapattana, Hunsoor, K R Nagar of Mysore district, Arakalagoodu taluk of Hassan district. The outflow from Harangi dam joins Harangi rivulet and merges with Cauvery River and stored in KRS dam. Harangi irrigation department assistant executive engineer Palanetrayya in a media released instructed the people living along the river basin to move to safer places as a precautionary measure ahead of releasing the water into the river.
