Bengaluru: Even after eight months since the alleged gangrape of a National Law School student on the Bengaluru University campus. Still, the security is lax at the campus, which is vulnerable to many such cases and attacks.
Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths arrested a gang of six notorious rowdies near Gandhi Bhavan inside the campus who were planning a robbery and other crimes. One of the accused is wanted for the murder of Sandeep Shetty, an aide of underworld operative Bannanje Raja, in Mangalore in November 2011.
The Homicide and Burglary Squad sleuths of the CCB arrested the rowdies on credible information. They found the gang in two cars and surrounded the accused. Three of them managed to escape, while the police nabbed the other six. The police recovered their vehicles, lethal weapons, chilli powder and mobile phones from all of them.
“The accused confessed that they were targeting passersby inside the campus. They were hiding near Gandhi Bhavan. This is the area where the National Law School student was raped in October last year. The gang members were arrested before they struck. We presume that we foiled another major crime inside the campus,” the officers attached to the squad said.
The officers have identified the accused Ramesh, Uday Anchan, Madhu, Avinash, Rohit, Rupesh and Preetesh. Majority of them are from Hassan. “Among the accused, 27-year-old Avinash alias Avi had murdered Sandeep Shetty,” the officers said.
