DC directs officials to implement Maitri scheme for transgenders

Mysore : Deputy Commissioner C Shikha  has informed that all deprtments concerned have been instructed to take  measures towards the early and effective implementation of Maitri Scheme aimed at the empowerment of  transgenders.

She was speaking after inaugurating an awareness workshop on empowerment of transgenders organised  here on February 21, Friday under the aegis of the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, Department of Women and Child Development and the District Government Employees Association.

The Deputy Commissioner said  though the scheme was launched last year  only three beneficiaries were selected . She said  the Department of Women and Child Development was striving to create awareness about the scheme.

The Deputy Commissioner also directed the officials to give more importance to schemes meant for the welfare of minorities and backward classes.

Several resource persons spoke on    the subject and highlighted the problems faced by transgenders and  the government facilities available to them.

M Mahadevu, ZP Chief, NR Vijay, Deputy Director of the Department of Women and Child Development,  Prof. Avadhesh Kumar Mishra, CIIL Director, Dr BN Ravish, Psychiatrist and others were present.
