Mysuru: Beef is quality meat and there are no clauses in the Indian constitution restraining an individual from its consumption, said Prof. K S Bhagawan, justifying his action of consuming beef at a public event organised by a trust in Kalamandir on June 26.
Speaking to media persons, Prof. K S Bhagawan, who inaugurated the programme by eating beef said beef was similar to mutton, poultry and fish. “Some say that beef is inferior but in reality it is good for health. Eating beef at the event was mainly to drive the blind beliefs associated with the dietary system.
Mention of beef consumption can be found in Hindu sacred texts and even the Indian constitution is not against it with instances of consuming the same in Parliament and Assembly in the past.
Today some Hindu activists have cleared area by sprinkling cow urine which is dirty simply because it is excreted out of the body. Now plenty of water has to be used to clean that place which stinks of urine which again results in water wastage,” said Prof Bhagawan.
‘Organisers to face music’
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Department of Kannada and Culture Chennappa has issued a notice to the organisers seeking explanation. He said the deposit amount has been forfeited and severe action will be taken against the organisers by blacklisting them.
Speaking to reporters on the incident, Chennappa said the organisers had sought online permission for the event and did not make any mention about beef consumption at the venue. Accordingly they were permitted to hold the event by collecting the deposit amount. The Deputy Commissioner has also been informed of the incident, Chennappa said.
Police security has been tightened around the venue to prevent any untoward incidents. The deputy commissioner of police of the area concerned managed to convince the right wing groups to withdraw their protest and the situation is now peaceful at the venue.
