Cauvery River overflows due to Incessant Rains

Madikeri: The rivers, rivulets and streams are overflowing in  an across the district owing to incessant rains in Madikeri, Napoklu, Sampaje, Talakaveri, Bhagamandala, Hudikeri, Srimangala, Ammatti, Shantalli, Shanivarasante and neighbourhoods.


The intermittent rains are witnessed in the localities of Ponnampete, Balale, Kodlipete, Somavarapete and Virajapete. Moderate rains were witnessed in Talakaveri the origin of Cauvery River and pilgrimage centre – Bhagamandala, while the rivulets Sujyoti, Kannika are overflowing with flood waters. The traffic on Napoklu – Bhagamandala Road is hindered owing to flooding.

The walls of over 10 houses locate on the bank of Cauvery River at Karadigodu developed cracks owing to collapse of river bank. Over 10 household families were evicted from their flooded houses.  The dried bamboo that has been standing tall on either side of Cauvery River is washed away.  The houses of a certain Yamuna, Iqbal, Sumitra, Krishna, Mary, Poovamma were washed away in floods.

Preparations are underway to begin ferry service from Bhagamandala – Madikeri along with expert divers and 10 home guards.  Two rafting services are pressed into service in case of emergency at Bhagamandala. 

One person died and a cow perished in the floods since June 1, besides a house was washed away fully. Thirty-six houses were partially damaged, causing the loss of nearly Rs 9.54 lac.Two cows worth Rs 32,000 were perished in the floods.

The preparations are underway to open gruel center at a community building located at Cheriaparambu – Banemotte at the limits of Napoklu in Madikeri taluk, in case the flood levels exceeds the danger mark.

The people living on the shores of rivulets are evicted owing to rising flood waters in Karadigodu, Kirehole and Pujikallu in the limits of Virajpet.  The health assistants are working around-the-clock to control any outbreak of communicable diseases.  The public utility provider has assigned the workmen to restore electricity in case of power failure.
