Accused gets life term for killing own wife

Mysuru: The second Additional District and Sessions judge Vijayakumar Anand Shetty awarded life term to a main accused and handed five others a jail term of 3 months and a fine of Rs 10000 in a case related to murder.

The main accused Srinivas, son of Late Thammiah of Maliyuru Village, Bannur Hobli in T.Narsipur Taluk was arrested along with five others in a case related to killing his own wife by pouring kerosene and setting her ablaze in 2012.

The deceased was Jyothi, daughter of Puttaswamy of Sujjaluru village who led a happy married life with the main accused for 9 years. Over a period of time, he resorted to drinking and gambling. Being a habitual drunkard and gambler, he used to assault his wife frequently for money. Once during a village car festival he demanded Rs 3,000 from his wife for buying alcohol and gambling .She refused to give her husband money that day. Enraged by her refusal to heed to his demand, the accused harassed her for long hours and finally doused her in kerosene and set her ablaze. Though Jyothi was admitted to the hospital she later succumbed to her injuries.

The police had recorded her statement before her death where she accused her own husband and his acquaintances responsible for the incident. The police took this as evidence and submitted all other relevant information to the court against the offenders after arresting them. The court after verifying the facts in its final judgment found the main accused guilty of committing the crime and sentenced the main accused for life time imprisonment and the others involved with a 3 month jail term and Rs 10000 fine.
