Udupi: Prasad Netralaya organised ‘Eye Donation Awareness Camp and rally’ from Board high school to Prasad Netralaya Hospital on Saturday, 06 September 2014.

After inaugurating the rally, Minister Incharge, Vinay Kumar Sorakke said eye donation is a sacred way of donation.

Most of the people here are hesitant to donate organs, this mentality must change. Youth should come up to donate organs after death which could give life to another person, said the minister after donating his eyes.

Dr Krishna Prasad, Head of Prasad Netralaya said that in the world there are around 45 lakh people suffering from eye disorders. Wherein in India alone there are 12.15 lakhs of them suffering from eye problems, out of which 1.2 suffer from blindness.

In Udupi and DK together 1.5 thousand people suffer from blindness every year. Every year we require about 2.5 lakh eye donors, however availability at present is only 25,000. The reason behind is that Indians are hesitant to donate organs, so we depend on Srilanka, a small country which has high donors. We should learn from them, he concluded.

Students from all college, scouts, guides, Medical student and auto rickshaws participated in the rally.
