Karkala: The Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad organised a protest meet in the bus stand area in the town on Thursday July 17 to oppose the rising cases of crime against women in the state.

Addressing the meeting, ABVP leader Ranjith R said the sexual assault case of a post-graduate lady student in front of her friend in Bangalore, the alleged rape of a class one student of a private school at Toobarahalli in Bangalore as well as the alleged rape and murder case of Ratna, a PUC student of Byndoor, have made the civilized society hang its heads in shame.
Pointing out that a total of 14,989 women have gone missing in the state between 2009 and 2011, he said during the current year alone, 325 minors and 151 women were sexually assaulted in Bangalore city. The government must act fast and initiate stringent action against perpetrators of crime against women, he said.
Sheethal Jain and other ABVP leaders were part of the protest. The agitators also took out a protest march from SVT Women’s College to the bus stand area via market road and TMC office road. They later submitted a memorandum to Tahsildar Babu Devadiga.
