Udupi: People of Udupi city may heave a sigh of relief as it is believed that water available in River Swarna is adequate to feed them till June 1.

MLA Pramodh Madhwaraj has said that if the water collected in low lying areas from Shiroor dam to Baje stretch is pumped, then the water is enough for next 15 to 17 days, which undoubtedly solves the drinking water crisis.

Three pumps of 110 hp capacity each have been installed on three boats in Bhandaribettu-Gundyadka low lying area to tap on the water available.

Addressing the reporters after inspecting the water pumping work, Madhwaraj said that Baje dam has 2.08 mts of water. Since this quantity is enough for only two days, efforts are being made to pump water from the low lying areas. If the water pumping work is done efficiently, then the water collected through the exercise can supply water to Udupi till June 5.

When water in this region exhausts, water would be then pumped from Puthige bridge and Puthigematha area using three pumps of same capacity.

With the weather reports hinting at the onset of monsoon in coastal district between May 30 to June 1, the water tapping plans of the Udupi district administration has made sure that adequate water is supplied to the city without any glitches.
