ZP resolves to oppose areca ban proposal

Mangalore: The 15th meeting of the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat held here on December 19, Thursday has passed a unanimous resolution to oppose the affidavit submitted by the Central government to the Supreme Court seeking ban on arecanut. The ZP meet also decided to stage protest at various levels against the proposal.

ZP Member Keshav Gowda Bajathur said the proposed ban will drastically affect around two lakh arecanut farmers of the State.

Meanwhile, Congress Member Devraj, MLC Monappa Bhandary and other members alleged that there has been irregularities in the distribution of compensation to arecanut farmers who suffered loss because of fruit rot disease. Many people who are not at all farmers have received the compensation amount, they alleged.
