Workshop updates students on bacterial enteric pathogens

Manipal: The three-day National Hands-on Training workshop organized jointly by Dr TMA Pai Endowment Chair (Bacterial Enteric Pathogens) and MMMC, Manipal campus concluded on Saturday with the participants, both students and faculty members from various medical colleges from within the state and outside, benefitting from the updates provided by the guest speakers and hands-on laboratory sessions on  identification of the bacterial enteric  pathogens  following the Standard CDC-WHO protocol.

The Chief Guest Dr BM Hegde, Senior Medical Officer, ART Center , District Hospital , Udupi stressed on the importance of conducting such training workshops  to increase awareness about the enteric infections including those that cause opportunistic infections in the HIV infected individuals.

The keynote address delivered by Dr DeepshikhaChakravortty from IISc, Bangalore on ‘Secretion machineries in bacteria and their role in pathogenesis was well-received by everyone. The guest speakers created awareness on the current antibiotic policies, molecular diagnosis of enteric infections as well as laboratory safety, infection control and biomedical waste management.

Dr Mamatha Ballal, Professor of Microbiology, Manipal University and the Organizing secretary of the workshop said that these kind of training workshops on enteric infections are not usually conducted especially in South India but are very important for increasing the awareness regarding the standard protocol for diagnosing such infections including those pathogens which were earlier not associated with diarrhea but are bow emerging.DrUllas Kamath, Dean of MMMC , Manipal campus presided over the valedictory function.
