Workshop on OSCE/OSPE held in Yenepoya Nursing College

Mangaluru: Yenepoya Nursing College organized one day workshop on OSCE/OSPE on 14th March 2015 between 10 am and 2pm in Conference Hall of Yenepoya Nursing College.

The workshop was organized for the faculty and students of constituent colleges of Yenepoya University.

A total of 40 participants represented Yenepoya Nursing College, faculty PG students, Post Basic B Sc Nursing Students, faculty of Yenepoya Physiotherapy College, Yenepoya Dental College and Yenepoya Institute of Nursing Sciences.

Dr. Asha P Shetty, Dean/ Principal Yenepoya Nursing College welcomed the resource person  Dr. C V Raghuveer Registrar Yenepoya University with a flower bouquet.

Dr. C V Raghuveer emphasized the importance of OSCE/ OSPE in present scenario and enlightened the group with significant features of OSCE/OSPE such as uniformity, comprehensiveness, competency and the reliability in examination system. He appreciated the team work of the nursing College and congratulated the faculty for organizing most needbased workshop.

At the end of theory session the group had an opportunity to participate or observe OSCE practical session which was held in adjacent laboratory comprising of 10 stations. The 10 teachers enacted as students and appeared for the examination. They were given prior instructions regarding location of station and how they have to perform in the examination. There were 4 recall stations, 3 interpretations, two on psychomotor assessment and one on affective domain assessing communication skill.

There were three examiners with predetermined checklist to assess the procedure skills and also there were simulated clients in two stations who were trained for the same.The PBBSc and MSc students were the student observers gave a response towards objective evaluation and expressed the desire to include such system in exam.

Dr. Rashmi Jain, Associate Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Coordinator of Medical Education Unit Yenepoya University, gave her critique for the improvement of OSCE/ OSPE and suggested to have OSCE Bank in respective colleges. Six participants representing various constituent colleges of Yenepoya University put forward their view on workshop.

Participants felt stations were well organized, and also said that it will be a new experience of practical exam, there will be no fear and stress towards examiners, OSCE/OSPE, helps to avoid bias. They expressed that the space provided was congested between the stations, and one of the participant said that it will be difficult to conduct OSCE/ OSPE when the exams are conducted on live patients.Participants gave their feedback on structured feedback form, 83% of participants felt all OSCE stations were well prepared giving adequate knowledge and 100% felt OSCE was useful to assess the diversity of skills.

On the whole participants left the workshop with the new hope of implementing the Objective Structured practical Examination in their respective colleges.
