Bantwal: Congress backed Vasanti Chandappa and Yasmeen was elected as new town councilor and deputy councilor respectively during the elections held on Thursday September 12.
The councilor post was reserved for a woman of SC that enabled Vasanti to get elected easily. She became the first SC woman to be elected as town councilor. The deputy councilor post was reserved for women from general class and there were 4 contestants. However, the party corporators allowed Yasmin only to contest for deputy councilor. Although, SDPI backed Mumtaz also submitted her papers to contest for deputy councilor, she had withdrawn the same at the last moment. It has enabled Yasmin to be elected unanimously.
Tahsildar Malleswamy was the nodal officer conducted the proceedings.
State minister Ramanath Rai Congratulates
The state minister Ramanath was present during the elections and congratulated the newly-elected councilors.
Speaking on the occasion, minister Ramanath said that the councilors have great challenges in discharging their duties and urged them to lay special emphasis on making the optimum use of state funds for the integral, development of localities under its limits.
If all the members actively and willingly work towards the progress of town, the people will be pleased with your efforts, said minister Ramanath. ‘The second phase of drinking water project has been approved by the state government which has to be taken up at the earliest. The construction of private bus stand, amphitheater and garbage disposal unit has to be expedited, urged minister Ramanath.
The Congressmen congratulated the newly-elected councilors on the occasion. The BJP members were absent during the election process. BJP has hijacked the prospect of Congress reign in Puttur town council by operation lotus, but none of the BJP party men participated in the election process. Its learned that BJP men believed that Congress backed Vasanti Chandappa was lone member eligible to be elected as councilor which was the cause for abstaining the election.
