Mangalore: A 29-year-old engineer from Goa met with a motor bike accident which incapacitated his upper limb due the avulsion of the brachial plexus at the neck (brachial plexus is a group of nerves which makes the upper limb move and also carries sensation.

The nerve once avulsed for the spine cannot be attached back. It becomes difficult for the patient to restore. Two months back he underwent a surgery without any result. Unpredictability is pervasive in health care system. This challenge was accepted by the medical team of Father Muller Medical College Hospital.

Dr Latheesh Latheef ,MS (ortho) ,DNB ( ortho) ,FNB ( Hand & Micro) , Unit chief  of the Hand and Micro surgery ,Dept of Orthopaedics and his team  and Dr Kishan shetty, Dr Hilda and their team  from the department of Anaesthesia and surgical nursing staff , performed 8 hours  of  prolonged surgery where transferring the functioning nerves around the neck and chest to power the right  upper limb.

The unique and complicated surgery is expected to restore the useful function and sensation to the hand. There is a rapid recovery on the part of the patient.
