Kasargod: When the modern generation is staying away from agriculture, little school children are setting an example by growing vegetables in the school yard. It’s a magnificent sight to watch children rejoicing at the outcome of their efforts.
Children from Chervathur Turutti in Kasargod are being trained to become self reliant in the field of agriculture. Lush green vegetable plants surround the school yard. Initially children had grown potatoes and now there is a whole lot of vegetables varying from okra to brinjal to cucumber to long beans.
The school need not buy vegetables from open market as the vegetables grown in the school premises are sufficient to feed the children for their mid-day meal. The school teachers supervise the gardening activities of the children. Organic manures are being used at all stages of growth and insecticides are eliminated to net protein rich vegetables.
Paddy was grown extensively which was replaced by vegetables considering economic benefits. Now people are staying away from agriculture and all vegetable produces comes from different states where harmful chemicals are used. To create awareness about farming and gardening among the students at early years of their learning is a good move as children reap the benefits of their hard work and at the same time get basic knowledge in the field of agriculture.
