Mysore: Environment protection is a big challenge facing the society, said Dr M.A. Shanker, Research Director of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore.

Speaking after inaugurating the World Environment Day programme organised by the Environment Studies Department of Manasa Gangotri on Thursday June 5, he said environment protection is a collective responsibility. The indiscriminate felling of trees has hit hard environment, he said and urged people to think before felling trees.
A tree if it survives for 50 years will be worth over Rs 50 lakhs but also gifts abundant oxygen, he added.
Pointing out that farmers spend abundant water to grow even one kg of rice, he regretted the fact that huge quantity of rice is wasted in functions like weddings.
Prof. KS Rangappa, Vice Chancellor, Dr NS Belagali, Head of the Department of Environment Studies, Dr S Srikantaswamy and others were present.
