Bantwal:A vain bid to burgle the Vittalpadnur Co-operative Bank at Kolnad nere here has been reported  on the night of September 1, Sunday. That there was a foiled burglary attempt came to be known only when the bank staff arrived on September 2, Monday morning.

Sources said the thieved had gained entry into the Bank through the window and then  used a gas cutter in their bid to  open the locker. However, they were unsuccessful in their attempt. The gas cutter, cylinder, torch and other things have been left behind by the thieves.

Vittal and Bantwal police officials arrived at the bank for investigation. A dog squad and finger print experts too were pressed into service.

It is learnt, the bank had no CCTV cameras, burglar alarm or security guard giving a golden opportunity for burglary. But it was nothing but sheer luck that the thieves could not lay their hands into the jewels worth Rs 2 crore and cash of Rs 2 lakhs in the locker.

Hundreds of customers of the bank had gathered in front of the bank premises on coming to know about the burglary attempt.
