Moodbidri: The ambitious thermal power project that was shelved owing to opposition at Tadady is knocking on the doors at Niddodi here. Meanwhile, the united struggle can effectively force the authorities to abandon the project proposed to set up in the neighbourhood of Niddodi. A few locals are supporting the project because of suitcase-full of money, said Swami Gangadarendra Saraswati of Sonda – Swarnavelli mutt in Kerala.

Swami Gangadarendra was speaking during Guruvandana programme that was organized jointly by Jnanaratna Eucation and Charitable trust and the villagers of Niddodi here on Tuesday October 1.

Wherever the thermal projects are commissioned, the entire region has been facing the environmental catastrophe.Thermal power project is dangerous than atomic reactors.  Thermal power plant emits ashes and releases hot water in the vicinity that is dangerous for water bodies, health hazard and damage the fertility of farmlands.  The need of the hour is to give up environmental destructive projects, instead seriously think about alternative such as renewable energies, bio fuels etc.  There scope to harness solar energy and other conventional energy sources to set off the shortfall of energy needs of the country, said Swami Gangadarendra.

RSS south region Pramuk Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat in his chief guest’s address said that the leadership of Swami Dharanendra can effectively force the authorities to shelve the project in Niddodi.  The project is being pursued because of the vested interests of a few persons, who are least concerned of locals. He queried, whether Dakshina Kannada district needs a ultra mega thermal power plant when such plant is causing havoc on locals in Nandikoor at Udupi district, queried Bhat.

Speaking on the occasion, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel said that The efforts are under way to ruin the prospect of undivided Dakshina Kannada district by environmentally destructive projects such as Yettinahole project, Elephant Corridor, Niddodi power plant.  It’s certain the people of DK will be driven to the street, while the locals trust on the guidance of Swami Gangadarendra in convincing the peoples’ representatives to shelve the project.

Jnanaratna Education Trust chairman Bhaskar Devasya, Harikrishna Punaroor, Bhuvanabhirama Udupi, Matrubhoomi Samrakshana Samiti vice president Alphonse D’Souza, chairman Poovappa Gowda, ZP member Janardhan Gowda and others were present on the occasion.

Sonda Bhaskar Bhat compered the programme.
