Mangaluru: Surprising but true, a bunch of undertrials housed in Mangaluru Jail were seen cleaning around the jail superintendent’s house, outside the jail premises, on Thursday evening. What was shocking was the fact that the group of 10 inmates was doing the work under the supervision of just one guard.
Despite the rules stating clearly that no undertrial can be asked to work outside the jail premises, the violation seems to have been a big gamble considering the sensitive nature of Mangaluru prison, which has always been in news for wrong reasons. Mangaluru prison has witnessed frequent fights between the inmates and it also witnessed a gruesome killing of two inmates as well. Every time there has been a raid inside the prison, the authorities remained in state of shock seeing the inmates’ access to gadgets and weapons.

Considering all these points, allowing the undertrials to work outside the jail premises without proper security has raised several questions.

However, Jail Superintendent Vishnumurthy said that one constable and one ASI was present and that he was disheartened by the criticism.

“I wanted to execute some work under Swach Bharath mission, but this has been made into an issue,” he said.
