Kundapur : Cash and valuables worth several lakhs of rupees including gold and silver articles were stolen in a serial theft case reported from the Popular Building in the heart of Kundapur town during the wee hours of August 20, Tuesday.
Thieves had struck has many as eight shops including five jewellery manufacturing shops, a herbal medicine shop and a newspaper office. Luckily, the CCTV footage in one of the jewellery shops had captured images of two thieves who had entered the shop at around 4.15 am. If one of them was a youngster, another man was around 40 to 45 years of age. This footage is believed to help the police apprehend the burglars.
As per reports the thieves gained entry into the building located close by the old bus stand of the town, by breaking open the locks of the main entrance. They then entered different shops and laid their hands on whatever possible including gold and silver items. It is said their main target were the jewellery shops and that they entered the medical shop and the Chalukya newspaper office as they couldn’t read their nameboards.
The theft took place in the five jewellery manufacturing shops on the second and third floors, owned by Harish Nayak. Even the shop owned by Guruprasad Shet, another machine cutting shop of Naveen were also burgled. The CCTV footage was available from the Vishwashree Gems and Jewelers.
Though there were many houses around, that none heard the sound of breaking open the locks, has surprised many. If one line of argument is that locals were involved, another argument is that the theft was committed by burglars from other states.
Finger print experts and dog squad have been pressed into service. Senior police officials including Kundapur DySP Yashoda are investigating the case.
