Mangaluru: After eight students died in a mishap involving a vehicle carrying school kids in Kundapura recently, the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district has laid down guidelines for school vans and vehicles to be followed sternly.
The DC has said that all the vehicles used for ferrying students must be painted yellow.
He directed the RTO to initiate stern action against the vans that fail to abide by the guidelines, which will be in force from July 1 onwards.
As per the guidelines, the autos can carry only six children aged below 12 years and Omni cars can carry only eight children.
Other guidelines are:
*The vehicles must display ‘ON SCHOOL DUTY’ on front and back side of the vehicle along with the name and phone number of the school.
* Vehicle must have first aid box in it.
* Speed governor must be installed.
* Grills must be installed on the glasses of the vehicle
* An attender/conductor must be employed in the vehicle without fail
