Mangalore: A two-day seminar on the topic, “Nuclear Energy for a Better Society” was inaugurated at the Eric Mathias Hall of St Aloysius College on December 12, Thursday morning. The seminar aimed at creating an awareness on the positive effects of nuclear energy was organised by the College in association with Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai. Padmashree award winner, Dr Sharad Kale, Head, TT and CD at BARC in Mumbai inaugurated the seminar by lighting the auspicious lamp.
In his address, Dr Kale said, “There are misconceptions about the safety of nuclear reactors, but if it is used for the right purpose there is more positivity than negativity.”
Dr SF D’Souza, who was the key-note speaker for the event, also expressed his view point about the nuclear reactors. He said, “Awareness must be created about the positive effects of nuclear energy among the youth. The concept of Atomic energy must be clear so that the beneficial features can be put to use.”
Fr Sweet D’Silva, Principal of St Aloysius College delivered the welcome speech. He said “Every aspect has two sides to it, wherein nuclear energy has become stigmatized towards humanity, although it can be used in positive ways as well for the betterment of the society.”
Fr Denzil Lobo SJ, Rector, St Aloysius Institutions presided over the function. He said, “There are various benefits of Nuclear energy, it is an essential source through which the energy can be put to good use.” Describing the uses of nuclear energy Fr Denzil Lobo said, “Nuclear energy is emission free, around 20 percent to 30 percent of the energy is used in electricity, it is a clean, safe, reliable and competitive energy source.”
“It is the only source of energy that can replace a significant part of the fossil fuels (coal, oil and gas) which massively pollute the atmosphere and contribute to the greenhouse effect. We must promote efficient use of nuclear energy as it also helps in cure of cancer”, he added.
