Moodbidri : A youth  who tried to escape with a gold chain on the pretext of polishing it, was trapped  by the public at Beluvai on August 13, Tuesday. However, another person managed to escape.

Two youth of Bihar origin had been to the house of Chennappa of Marpady on Tuesday morning and polished just a bronze vessel after realizing that there were men in the house. They then  moved to a neighbouring house  where there were two women. Initially they won the confidence of the women by polishing their toe ring. The gullible women then gave a  gold chain weighing two sovereigns for polishing. The youth  cleaned the chain in some solution and then wrapped it in a piece of paper asking the women to open it after half an hour. They then left the place.

However, the women  realized that they were cheated when they opened the paper and found a broken  artificial chain. But by then the youth had escaped. But locals  namely Praveen Shetty, Jaya Acharya, Chennappa,  Idinabba and others  went in search of them and  on gathering information that one of them had boarded a bus from Daregudde, stopped the bus at Beluvai and trapped the youth named Anand.

The stolen chain was seized from him and handed over to the family. The absconding youth  is identified as Mahesh. It is learnt the duo stayed in a rented house at Udupi.
