Pandeshwar cops arrest 3 chain snatchers; search on for 2 others

Mangalore: The Mangalore city police have been successful in arresting three chain snatchers who had  been  a menace to the society.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday January 3 at his office, Police Commissioner R Hitendra said that  the arrested  group of chain snatchers have also  been involved in  many other crimes. The trio has been identified as 22-year-old Sayeed Sahil from Kasargod, 25-year-old Mohammad Rafiq from Bantwal and 20-year-old Sahadhad Ali from Farangipete, whereas the other two involved in the case namely Tauseef and Riyaz are still at large and a search for them is underway, the Commissioner informed.

The arrests were made by the Pandeshwar police in connection with the 23 registered chain snatching cases from around the district. They have recovered 7 Mangalsutras and few chains and necklaces; the gold weighs 450 gm and is worth Rs 15 lakhs, Commissioner Hithendra said. It is also learnt that there is more gold to be recovered and the investigation is on.

The Commissioner said the accused were  also involved in many dacoity and robbery cases. Of them  Sayeed Sahil and Sahadhad Ali  are facing a case in Shimoga police station in a dacoity case, while Sayeed Sahil also has a case against him in Mangalore city police station for a two wheeler robbery.

Another arrested  Sahadhad Ali has a case against him in Mangalore  for selling ganja and in connection with a robbery,  whereas Mohammad Rafiq has chain snatching cases against him in Surathkal, Bajpe and Mangalore rural police stations.

The case was solved by Pandeshwar police station under the guidance of the Police Commissioner R Hitendra and Mangalore south sub-division Asst. Police Commissioner Pawan M.
