Mangalore: With an aim to make the youth and the citizens aware of atrocities against women and highlight the need for  legal protection with regards to the same in the society, a meeting was held wherein representatives from like-minded organizations gathered at NGO hall on Thursday, December 26.

The discussion focused on the subjects related to legal protection and steps to be taken in case of sexual atrocities against women and during the incidents of moral policing. Students from various colleges in the city participated.

The program was initiated as there has been a rise in the number of sexual assault and moral policing incidents in the district, including the recent incident of kidnapping and blackmailing two medical college students at Deralakatte.

Addressing the gathering, Child Welfare Committee Chairperson and advocate Asha Nayak with reference to the sexual assaults and moral policing said, “Normally when such incidents take place, the civil society supports the victim only in the initial stage, till the case is filed with the police. But, the society does not bother about rehabilitating the victim. The social mindset has to be changed.”

Moreover she also said, “The is no family or social support given to the victim, after the incident the victim comes to a stage where the victim not only files complaint and pursues the case, her education is hampered and the institute does not support her. In addition her family or even her friends do not support her. Lack of family support only adds to the trauma of the victim.”

Forum against Atrocity on Women Convenor Vidya Dinker suggested to form a team of lawyers in the city who can assist the victims of sexual assault and moral policing.

Rationalist Narendra Nayak was also present at the meeting and expressed his view point.
