Mangalore :The much awaited judgement in the case of gang rape of a 15 year old Odisha girl at the Mangalore Central Railway Station, has been pronounced. The two convicts K Ashok and Nishit A have been sentenced to Life Imprisonment by the Fourth Additional District and Sessions Court on September 21, Friday. The Court has also imposed a penalty of Rs 25000 on them and has directed that they will have to undergo an imprisonment of two more years if they fail to pay the penalty.
The judgement was pronounced by Judge BJ Naik. If one of the convicts K Ashok is a employee under a railway contractor, the other convict Nishit is a mechanical helper in Southern Railway. Meanwhile, the prime accused in the case Shameesh, a porter and sweeper hailing from Payyanur is absconding. The court had earlier during the week while convicting the duo had absolved another accused namely Abdul Sattar Ayub, a tea vendor at the railway station of the charges on the grounds of lack of evidences.
The incident had taken place on July 14, 2010 when the girl who was working as a maid in a house in Mangalore, was homesick and escaped from her employer’s house. She was at the station when the four approached her and on the pretext of helping her find the train to Goa where she wanted to go, took her to a stationed train and raped her.
The victim’s statement and forensic evidences helped in convicting the duo in the case. Though Nishit had not raped the girl, his presence at the spot of the crime made him equally responsible for the crime, the court contended.
