Mangaluru: Drugs have become one of the greatest evils in our society and nuclear families have contributed silently and allowed its undesirable effects on those who have not had a psychologically satisfactory life, said MLA J R Lobo after lighting the lamp to inaugurate, the World Anti Drug day on June 25, 2016. The function was organised by All India Janjagran Movement.

Lobo who was the Chief Guest said, “The age of computer, mobile, TV, has led to less communication between children and their parents resulting in absence of relationship and the bond of love. It is the responsibility of each and every family to take care of themselves, by systematic and constant interaction with a lot of love and care for each other. Such good relationship would help understand each other in a better manner in a family and keep them in good harmony. This will help keep an evil like drug away”.

Speaking further, Lobo said that, it is in the family that one can think of setting children right and bring about changes in them. School, society and environment can do very little to an individual child, when there is no moral fear in them and that is when they become victims to drugs.

Lobo recalled how his mother who was a school teacher, had taken promises from him and three other children in their family, when he was studying in 2nd standard, that they would not take to drinking or drugs. Though they were very young and did not know anything about alcohol or drug, he said they promised their mother and that created a moral fear in them. “That is what a mother can do to a child today by giving food for stomach and a mind full of food for thought which would give them joy and happiness,” the MLA said.

“What we are doing by only observing such anti-drug day and making such long speech, is like treating the symptom and not the root of the disease. It brings pain and agony, when the youth power particularly the student community which can bring changes to this world, itself fall a victim to such drug menace,” he added.

Prof Vinutha Rai, Organiser, NSU unit, Mangalore University said that the statistics have revealed that a large percentage of children in our State have become victims to drug. She said, “Though this figure is unbelievable, we will have to make efforts to make those figures false by reforming children and students. This is possible by choosing and following an inspiring role model”.

She gave a few tips to the students and youngsters, by making them repeat saying, drug users are losers and losers are drug users. Drug users are retarded, so don’t get started. No drug users grow old because they die young. She advised children and students to share their feelings among teachers and their parents and let good thought prevail over them. Students, children and every citizen have to take the responsibility of eliminating drugs, she said.

A rally was held on the occasion to create awareness among public from Town Hall to Statebank and a memorandum was handed over to Deputy Commissioner, A B Ibrahim.

The function was presided by M R Rangashamiah, President – Karnataka Liquor Austerity Board (KLAB), Government of Karnataka Bengaluru. Kasthuri Panja, Vice President – Dakshina Kannada Zilla Pancahatyat; K Mahaveer Arji Regional Director, SKDRDP, Udupi Division; Umarabba, Project Director SKDRDP, Mangaluru; Mohammad Isma, All India JanJagran Movement, DK & Udupi, Chandramouleshwara Swamy, Secretary – KLAB and a large number of students and women were present.
