Moodbidri: The Nagarika Hitharakshana Vedike of Mijar has urged the Edapadavu Gram Panchayat against granting permit for the setting up of a tar mixing plant in the village. The appeal comes in the wake of information that a person had planned to set up the hazardous plant close by a Janatha Colony at Latrattu in Badaga Edapadavu village.

The Vedike Secretary Sudhaker Poonja said a person named Radhakrishna had applied for permit for an interlock, hollow block and tar mixing plant by making local poor people believe that it would not do any harm and by luring them with cash.
The Vedike has expressed fears that the setting up of the plant in the area may even contaminate a nearby government well which is relied upon by local residents for drinking water. The plant may also cause damage to an adjacent forest land. He further said there can be no objection to the setting up of a hollow block and interlock unit but a tar mixing plant would affect the health of the people.
Meanwhile, Edapadavu Panchayat President Ramanna Shetty said a person named Radhakrishna had sought Panchayat permission for the plant at Latrottu. He made it clear that the Panchayat would not grant permission if people do not want the plant in the area.
