Mangalore: “Our country is a window of opportunities and we must think big in-turn to achieve big. NMPT is now considered a major Port among other ports in the country”, said Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dr M Veerappa Moily after laying the foundation stone for berth number 18 for container and bulk cargo and inaugurating the Petroleum Oil and Lubricant (POL) berth number 13 at New Mangalore Port on Sunday December 29.











Praising Dr Tamilvanan, the Chairman of NMPT, Moily said under his chairmanship since nine years, the NMPT has contributed a great deal to the nation and wished it would register much more success.
Dr P Tamilvanan, delivered the welcome speech as well as felicitated Dr Moily and the other guests for their immense support towards the project.
The Port constructed berth number 13, a POL berth, at oil dock arm to cater to the additional demand of potential users. The estimated cost of the berth was Rs 73.17 crore. The task of construction of the jetty was given to M/s DBM Geotechnics and Construction Private Limited, Mumbai. The work on the jetty commenced on February 2, 2011, and completed on February 25, 2013, at a cost of Rs 51.69 crore. The berth has been constructed on 341 piles varying in depths from 25 meters to 50 meters. The overall length of the berth is 350 meters and it has a capacity of handling cargo to the tune of 57.8 million tons per annum.
Berth number 18 is designed for a vessel size of 1,25,000 DWT with a maximum LOA 280 m, beam 42 m and depth of 15.1 m. The length of the berth is 325 m and the width 25 m.
The berth will be constructed on 220 piles. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 137.44 crore. The work has been awarded to M/s DBM Geotechnics and Construction Private Limited, Mumbai.
T S N Murthy, Deputy Chairman, NMPT also graced the occasion along with B Ramanatha Rai, State Minister for Forest,JR Lobo, Mangalore South MLA, AB Ibrahim, Deputy Commissioner and Tarun Kumar Jajoria, Director of Ministry of Shipping.
