Mangalore : A modern Primary Radar System that can provide accurate information on weather and cloud formation, which is crucial for safe landing of aircrafts would be installed at Mangalore Airport in the near future. Presently, the airport has only a Secondary Radar that is beneficial for aircrafts that take off from the airport. The plans to install a modern Primary Radar gains relevance considering the tragic Air India Express tragedy that claimed 157 lives after a crash-landing three years ago.
A Primary Radar will also help in landing of more aircrafts in a short span of time and would also avoid diversion of aircrafts. In an instance reported a few years ago, an aircraft carrying Congress President Sonia Gandhi had to be diverted back to Delhi after it could not land in the airport due to cloudy weather conditions.
Radhakrishna, Director of Mangalore International Airport has informed that a team of experts would be visiting the airport shortly to hold discussions with regard to the installation of a primary radar.
He said the installation works of a modern control tower at the airport is in the final stages.
