LIC agents protest over levy of service tax

Mangalore : The LIC Agents Organisation of India staged a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in the city on February 1, Saturday opposing privatisation  moves and  urging for the withdrawal of the  service  tax levied  on insurance premium.

Addressing the protestors, Ramesh Kumar, Secretary of the State Committee of the Organisation has opened up various public sector undertakings in transport, telecommunications, banking, insurance sector for Foreign Direct Investment. He alleged that the government was trying to destabilise the LIC which was playing a very important role in the insurance sector. Stating that  34 policies have been  closed as on December 2013 and  six new policies opened in January 2014 have higher premium. They have also urged to revoke the orders to reduce the commission of agents.

The LIC agents took put a protest march from the LIC office at Pandeshwar to the DC office. Gangadhar Poojari, President of Udupi unit of the Organisation, Sunil Kumar Bajal, Honorary President,  Suman Rao, Tenmoli, Rajan D’Costa and others took part in the protest.
