Mangalore: Agitating against the controversial “Made Mada Snana” ritual the Karnataka Rajya Hindulida Vargagala Jagruthi Vedike  commenced a day long hunger strike  in front of the DC office in Mangalore on November 7, Saturday.

Addressing the protestors,  KS Shivaramu, State President of the Vedike said the superstitious ritual that is being observed during the Champa Shashti festival at Kukke Subrahmanya temple should be strongly opposed.

He said, “ The ritual is nothing but a inhumane act though its followers claim that  Made Mada Snana has a history  of 100 years. We have been protesting for the past four years and at a certain point the agitation had even turned violent.”

“We will protest till this ritual is prohibited. Other superstitious practices like Bethale Seve too have a long history, but they have been banned in the better interests of mankind,” he added.

“This ritual is a disgrace to our culture, why can’t it be prohibited then?”, he questioned

Sri Rachoti Shivaacharya Swamiji in his address said, “In the name of ‘Made Mada Snana’ our culture is offended. Before rising to the post of  Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah had made various promises to bar  the ritual, but now that he has got the position be has shown no interest in keeping up his words.”

“It is our humble request that the Supreme Court and the government stand against such in-human practice,” he said.

Sri Basavaraj Devaru from Revanasiddheshwara Mahamutt said, “Peace, Equality, individuality should be maintained in the society. The so called great leaders seek egalitarianism, but “Made Mada Snana”is a slur on the people of India.”

Recalling a statement of the government that people have a free will and if they do not want the practice they should not do it, Sri Basavaraj Devaru added that it is the responsibility of the government to educate the people against this superstition.

“Lately there are several issues that have been a disgrace to the state of Karnataka. Made Mada Snana is one of them,” he added.

The Vedike urged the Supreme Court as well as the High Court to ban Made Snana ritual and demanded death penalty to those who encourage such practices.

A.K.Bhandary, Jayanand Devadiga, Ahmed Kandak, Yusuf Bakhtar, Vijay K, K.Monappa, Shekhar Belthangady, Haneef, Muneer Katipalla and others were present.
