Mangalore : “The report submitted by an expert committee formed during the NDA rule stated that there are evidences to prove that chewing of arecanut  is carcinogenic, said  KPCC Secretary Ivan D’Souza during a press meet held here on Friday December 27.

Stating as so, Ivan  alleged that the NDA government was responsible for the move to ban arecanut.  “Former CM D V Sadananda Gowda who now speaks about  the interest of arecanut growers had failed to come to the rescue of the growers. The BJP is following opportunist policy,” he further added

Commenting on the Union Government’s affidavit before the Supreme court seeking a ban on arecanut, Ivan said that the officials had submitted  the affidavit without bringing it to the notice of the Union Health Minister. The Health Minister in turn has promised to withdraw the affidavit, Ivan said and assured that the Congress will never make any move which will harm the interest of the arecanut growers.
