Kasaragod: The Vidyanagar police have intensified their investigations in the case of judge B K Unnikrishnan hanging himself in his quarters in Sullia on November 9. Prima facie evidence in the autopsy report suggests that the judge was tortured by the cops, before he ended his life. Based on that evidence, the case is likely to be registered against Sullia cops who were on duty when the judge was nabbed. The scars below the waist in the report suggest that he was kicked and hit with the baton (lathi).
It may be recalled that the deceased Unnikrishnan had hit the headlines after he got into an altercation with an auto driver in Sullia while on a pilgrimage to Subramanya temple. The argument over the auto fare snowballed into a scuffle and ultimately landed in Sullia police station. The police too stated that the magistrate had obstructed them from discharging duties.
It is gathered that Unnikrishnan had informed the Kasaragod circle inspector about the police assault and had lodged a complaint. Later he was admitted to a private hospital and treated before he ended his life, presumably, since he was unable to bear the insult and assault.
After his death, his body was handed over to his relatives after the post mortem at Pariyaram Medical College Hospital. Based on the autopsy report, a case has been registered against one sub inspector and a constable though their names have not been mentioned. However, action is likely against those on duty when Unnikrishnan was in police station, where he was brutally assaulted by the cops.
Kasaragod police will initiate further action, once the report reaches their office.
