Mangalore: The Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM),Cordel unit organized their yearly Football Match, on their home ground on Thursday November 14 at 8.00 am.
The program started with a prayer song after which the welcome speech was delivered by ICYM president Arun Pinto. Before the match began, an inaugural dance was performed by the children on the heart throbbing football songs ‘Waka Waka’ and ‘Waving flag’.
On the occasion of Football Cup 2013, the national level players were felicitated for their success in the field by Ivan D’souza. Diona D’souza, Christline Pinto and Trinette D’souza were the national level players to receive the honors.
In his presidential address, Fr Valerian Pinto the parish priest of Cordel Church and director of ICYM Cordel unit said, “I am pleased that, my guidance and suggestions have always been appreciated by the members of ICYM Cordel unit. I look up to many more initiatives as such.”
Ivan D’souza, the guest of honor for the program said, “Cricket has been highlighted in India comparative to other games, thus other sports also must be instigated.”
After the Ball revealing and the Trophy revealing ceremony done by the chief guest Fr Arun Lobo, he said, “Football is a fantastic game and must be promoted.Youth and kids must take interest in various sports and not be inclined just to cricket.”
The tournament commenced with the Ball kicking ceremony which was done by Fr Valerian Pinto followed by the chief guest Fr Arun Lobo and Ivan D’souza
The teams(parish) that took part in the tournament were Urwa, Shirva, Bejai, Milagres, Bondel, Omzoor, Bendur, Darebail, Kulshekar, Cascia, Ashoknagar, Angelore, Valencia, Vamanjoor, Neermarga and Bajpe. The referees for the match were Mohammad Haneef and former Indian team football player John Gilbert D’souza.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) secretary Seema D’souza. Ashwin D’costa compered the inaugural ceremony.
