Madikeri : An attempt to trace the background of Ayesha Banu who was arrested along with her husband from her Panjimogaru residence in Mangalore for allegedly funding terror activities, has revealed that she hailed from Kodagu.
Aysha is the youngest of the eight children of Kaveramma of Devanagiri village near Virajapete. Her original name is Puttoli alias Rathi. She had her primary education at Devanagiri School and had eloped with Jubair of Mangalore origin with whom she developed friendship. She later married him, embraced Islam and was renamed Ayesha Banu.
Jubair who worked overseas for some time, on his return to Mangalore had purchased a house at Manjotti in Panjimogaru ward. The couple has a daughter studying in eighth standard, a son Amir and a four month old baby. There was a discord between the couple after Jubair had a second marriage. It is learnt, a local organization had even tried for reconciliation between the couple.
A soft natured woman, Ayesha Banu has now landed behind bars on the charges of abetting terrorists, probably owing to her husband‘s ploy or their greed for money.
An account opened in the name of Ayesha Banu in the Hampankatta Branch of a nationalized bank had transactions worth over Rs 2 crores in a short term. Investigations have also proved that the cash was remitted to her account from Pakistan and the same were withdraw by IM ultras using ATMs. Aysha Banu had bank accounts not only in Mangalore, but over 35 accounts in benami names in various places including Kodagu and Bihar state and has transactions worth over Rs 5 crores.
The Panambur police who subject Ayesha Banu, Jubair and their four month old baby to medical examination at Wenlock Hospital later produced them before the Third JMFC Court on November 13, Wednesday seeking their custody for additional investigation.
Soft natured woman : When Ayesha Banu’s brother Motappa of Devanageri Village was contacted, he said that his sister Puttoli alias Rathi was a soft natured girl and that it was impossible for them to believe that she had abetted terrorists. He also informed that she had eloped with Jubair alias Jubi of Mangalore 18 years ago and had later converted herself to Islam. Though Ayesha Banu used to visit Virajapete, she never had been to Devanageri village, he clarified and added Ayesha Banu along with her husband had attended a wedding at Virajapete in April last and had then returned to Mangalore.
Motappa further said that his family has no contact with Jubair and that Ayesha Banu used to interact with them only for a few minutes whenever she met them at any function. “It is a sad to know that my sister who studied in Devanageri primary school is invovled in such heinous act,” he said with pain.
By the way, the fact that the terror network had cast its dark shadow in Kodagu had come to light two years ago itself. Then it was revealed that there was a Kodagu link in the serial blast reported in Bangalore under the leadership of Lasksher –e-Toiba. The Bangalore CCB police had arrested one Tadiyandaveer Nazeer, basically a Kerala man who had settled at Lakkere Paisari at Hosathota near Somwarapete on the pretext of engaging in ginger cultivation. He was accused of sketching the Bangalore serial blast. Even Kerala PDP leader Abdul Nasir Madani was arrested on the charges of visiting Nazeer and both are presently in judicial custody.
All these aspects make it certain that the terror foot prints are clearly felt in Kodagu. too.
