Bantwal : A gram Panchayat staff of Vittal is now facing the charges of stealing Anna Bhagya rice meant to be distributed under PDS. On December 10, Tuesday, officials of the Department of Food and Civil Supplies seized 140 kg of rice from the labourers’ room at the Panchayat Garbage disposal unit at Palike near Vittal. It is learnt, a GP employee had sold the rice to the labourers.
The labourers of the garbage disposal unit used to reside in two rooms and the officials raided the place following definite information that the rice was stocked illegally in the room of one Venkamma. When officials raided the place, they found about 140 kg of rice. It is learnt, Satish, a Gram Panchayat employee of Nekkarekadu had sold nearly 20 kg of rice to the labourers at Rs 15 per kg.
The raid followed a directive of Bantwal Tahsildar Malleswarmi. Bantwal’s food inspector Srinivas, Deputy Inspector Sridhar and Vittal Village Accountant Prakash were in the raiding team. A case will now be registered in the Assistant Commissioner’s Court.
The media was also informed over telephone regarding the illegal stock of rice at 11 am and at around 12.15 pm the Panchayat President Bhavani Rai, Accountant Naveen Robert and Panchayat members arrive and check the rice hidden in gunny bags. Village Accountant Prakash arrives at 12. 30 noon and informs the Bantwal Food Inspector and Tahsildar. At 1.21 pm the officials arrive and seize the rice.
