Moodbidri : At a meeting convened at the KPTCL Auditorium recently it has been decided to do a Pollution Audit of the UPCL thermal power plant in the wake of the widespread fears expressed by people over the government plans to go in for an ultra mega thermal power plant at Niddodi.
But it is now widely believed that the UPCL pollution audit is nothing but an attempt to appease the people considering the opposition to the proposed Niddodi project.
The Central Electricity Authority and Power Finance Corporation officials who had conducted a spot inspection at Nidodi some time back had later held a meeting with the Chief Secretary of the Energy Department and other officials. It was then decided to conduct a detailed audit of the air and water pollution caused by the UPCL and also to get the study done by TARI, IIT or IISc.
The Power Corporation had even written letters to the agencies in this regard. It is now believed that the pollution audit was nothing but a ploy to pacify the anti-Niddodi activists as the government plans place the audit report of UPCL before them in case of opposition.
