Mangalore : In a first of its kind procedure on a heart attack patient, a micro-net mesh stenting was done on a heart patient at the Unity Heart Institute, Unity Health Complex in Mangalore.

Dr Paul Varghese, Interventional Cardiologist at Unity Heart Institute performed the stenting to obtain excellent results. A press release from Unity Health Complex said one of the complications of using standard stents in an acute heart attack setting is that blood clots can fragment during stenting and find their way downstream to cause plugging of smaller vessels. The release said the new MGUARD stent has a micro-net mesh on the outside of the stent which prevents clots from going down stream. It further added that recent trial results unveiled at Paris in May 2013 showed that these stents had superior results compared to standard drug coated stents and bare metal stents used on heart patients.
