DYFI, SFI and JMS protest police inaction over minor girl’s rape

Mangalore: The DYFI, SFI and the JMS held a protest on Thursday May 8 to condemn the rape of  a minor Muslim girl from Kolpe, Idkidu Urimajalu and register their disapproval of the police’s failure to arrest the accused.

Addressing the protestors in front of the SP office in the city, Muneer Katipalla, the state vice-president of DYFI said, “I am not trying to politicize the issue like the BJP leaders do, rather I am trying to deliver justice and urge the administration to take the appropriate action.”

Katipalla alleged that political influence has been excercised in the case due to which, even after more than 3 weeks have passed since the incident no action has been taken by the police.

He further questioned the District In-charge minster, Ramanatha Rai and the other representatives of the Congress ruling party with regards to the atrocities on women in the State as well as the Nation.

Referring to the Manipal gang rape case Katipalla said that the Home Minister K J George visited the victim as she was from his home town Kerala, but when a girl from the minority section of the society endured violence, the Party has shown disregard, he alleged.

Members of the SFI and JMS addressed the agitators and urged for justice.

A memorandum was to be submitted to the Superintendent of police Dr Sharanappa S D, but as he was not available,  the protestors submitted the memo to the DYSP HD Mendonza.Accepting the Memorandum DYSP HD Mendonza said, “Teams have been formed and the investigation is on. In the next two days the proper status of the case will be announced” HD Mendonza denied that there is any kind of pressure on the police with regards to the case,.

The case

According to the case reports, the three accused have been identified as Bashir a resident of Radhukatte, in Vital Padnoor village who has also charges of stealing a bikes, another accused is known as Bakuta a resident of Bobbekeri and Jabbar, resident of Karyadi . Allegedly the married men made false promises of getting married to her after which the girl’s parents filed a police complaint in the Vittla Police Station.

The accused are known to be habitual offenders, however the police has been unsuccessful in catching hold of them.

Earlier a protest was held in front of the Vittal police station, urging the police department to take some action.
