Duo nabbed for threatening merchant for hafta

Karkala : In a major breakthrough, Hebri police who acted on a tip off have arrested  two persons who had  reportedly threatened a textile merchant for a hafta of Rs 50 lakhs, warning him of dire consequences if their demand was not met.

The duo namely Tellar Nitin (23), and Abubakker Siddique (26) from Balepuni, Bantwal were arrested on May 5, Monday.

According to sources, the two who were accomplices of notorious criminal Kali Yogish of Udupi had  telephoned a textile merchant named Hebri Yogish Bhat demanding hafta. They also claimed that they were making the calls at the orders of Ravi Poojari, the notorious underworld don.

It is said the two men, now arrested had visited the house of the businessman on April 25 and had warned him against ignoring the calls for hafta.

The businessman who was until then ignoring the calls, informed the police and sought  protection.

The police who immediately swung into action, managed to arrest the two at Hebri on May 5. A pistol and mobile phone have been seized from them.

It is learnt, the duo were arrested last year for threatening a businessman named Joy of Kerala origin.  But after their release in their case they were once again arrested for hatching a dacoity plan.  They were in prison for 15 days and were released. Now, they are once again behind bars in the extortion case.
