Udupi: The CPI (M) Udupi district staged a protest  near the Clock Tower here on January 20, Monday condemning the UPA government over the inflation and rise in cases of atrocities on  Dalit in the state.

The CPI (M) Secretary Shankar demanded an immediate action to control inflation especially with regards to the price hike in petroleum products and also LPG cylinders.

He also urged the State government to minimize the local tariff of petroleum products and help the people. He added that both the Central and State governments have failed to look into the public issues and have burdened the common man.

Shankar alleged that the increase in numbers of atrocity cases reported against Dalits in the State is a cause of concern. The law has failed to protect Dalits whereas the Police department have been fixing youths of Dalit communities in  false cases, he said.

He said, “People who ill-treat the Dalits must be punished and should be charged under the Prevention of Atrocities on Dalits Act. Strict measures must be taken against the accused who assaulted Dalits in Atani taluk in Belgaum district.”

“The fundamentalists are into creating an atmosphere of hatred across state  keeping an eye on the  forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The government should immediately take  stringent measures to curb communal activities across the state. They should direct the police department to arrest those people who are involved in communal violence irrespective of their religion,” Shankar added.

During the protest a memorandum was forwarded to Deputy Commissioner and it was also learnt that the CITU is organizing ‘Vidhana Soudha Chalo’ campaign against the implementation of ESMA on January 23.
