Counterfeit currency seized in Surathkal, duo arrested

Mangalore: The Surathkal police have arrested a duo from West-Bengal as they were allegedly trying to circulate counterfeit currency in the district; the Mangalore City police informed during a press meet on Monday January 20.

The culprits have been identified 20-year-old Sushant Mandal and 19-year-old Sharath Mandal, both residents of Pardevanapur Village in West Bengal under Bishab Nagar police station limits.

Accordingly it is known that on the night of January 19, around 9.00pm Sushant came to a shop to buy cold drinks and he paid Rs 1000 note to the shopkeeper. The observant shopkeeper doubted the note to be a counterfeit and he immediately called the Surathkal police.

On receiving the information the SPI of Surathkal along with constables arrived on the spot, after investigation they apprehended and arrested the offenders.

The investigation has revealed that the duo where sent to the district by a man identified as Salim from West Bengal, they arrived at Surathkal on January 17 and lived in a rented apartment.

The duo had come with an objective to circulate counterfeit currency or fake notes in the district, for which they used to obtain commission. They were assigned to make purchases in the local market and swell the notes.

The police have arrested the accused under the section 489(B) (C), and seized 81 notes of Rs 1000 and 23 notes of Rs 500 counterfeit currency which is around Rs 92500. There were also original notes worth Rs 40420, under the denomination Rs 500, Rs 100, Rs 50, Rs 20, Rs 10.

The serial numbers of fake notes include 5 GR, 8 GQ (for face value of Rs 1,000), 6 A R, 1 C G, 5 K F, 5 T C, 4 G C, 3 U P, 2 C H, I A P, 1 T N, 9 H R, I E Q, 4 K M, 1 N E, 7 D D, 3 D V, 4 M W, 9 F C, 3 T E and 2 F R ( for face value of Rs 500).

The case was solved under the leadership of Panambur ACP S Ravi Kumar and his associates Surathkal station police officer MA Natraj, Surathkal constables Vijay Raja, BK Krishna, Santosh, Girish Suvarna, Girish Jogi, Punit, Raja and Rafiulla.

The Commissioner of Police R Hintendra IPS, Asst. Police Commissioner K Y Jagadish and the Mangalore city police congratulated the police men and locals for their alertness and cooperation.
