Puttur: The V Additional District and Sessions Court released two accused in 2012-Sampya acid attack case, considering the period they were kept in judicial custody as their jail term, on Saturday.
Three persons were arrested in connection to the acid attack, out of which the prime accused Mohan Kumar Hegde and third accused Shanthigodu Prashanth have been released.
The incident occurred in 2012, when Seetharam Acharya (62), a small vendor running business outside Puttur Mahalingeshwara temple and his sons Amrithesh (35) and Rajkumar(28) both goldsmiths were waiting near Venkatesh Saw mill, near Sampya to meet a customer who had called from a unknown number and had kept an offer to remodel old jewellery.
Amrithesh had started a jewellery making unit near Sullia Chennakeshava temple two years ago. His brother used to run a unit at Puttur and everyday Amrithesh used to travel to Puttur and proceed to his home at Perigeri along with his brother and father on the bike.
As usual, when Amrithesh reached Puttur and picked his father and brother and then reached Venkatesh Saw mill as promised to the unknown caller, an auto stopped near them and two persons in the auto splashed acid at the trio.
Soon in connection to the case, Hemalatha Poojary (36) from Bannur, Mohan Kumar Hegde (28) from Chikkamudnur and Shanthigodu Prashanth were nabbed and kept under judicial custody.
Meanwhile, Hemalatha was released on bail and was subsequently acquitted in the case.
However, hearing the plea of the remaining two, the Court said that since the two had served 4 years and 15 days in jail, it would be considered as their jail term and ordered their release on April 30.
The Court has ordered the prime accused to pay Rs 5,000 and third accused Rs 10,000 to the court.
