Mangalore: Doctors at the Mangala Hospital in Mangalore have given a fresh lease of life to a one and a half day old infant which was suffering from a congenital defect called bilateral choanal artresia.

Dr Gautham Kulamarva, ENT Surgeon who headed  the team of physicians who performed the surgery said  this was a rare trans nasal endoscopic surgery to successfully correct the defect. Other doctors  of the team were Dr Murli Keshava, neonatologist and Dr Ganapathi, anaesthesiologist.

According to Dr Gautham Kulamarva the baby was suffering from breathing difficulty as  the communication between the nose and throat was blocked due to an unnatural bone in the back of the nose. He said this is one of the rarest cases   and less than one in 20,000 to 30,000 births.

He said  the baby  and the mother are fine and have been discharged from hospital. Dr Kulamarva said perhaps this was the first of its kind surgery in India while so far only three to four such surgeries have been performed in the world.
